When I got to
the top of the stairs at the mausoleum, some guys in orange jackets
came over. When they found out that I was am American, they were
very interested in what I thought of Bucharest. They were members of
the organization URR - The Union for the Reconstruction of Romania.
Elections were going to be held in June and today, May 9, was "Europe
Day". There were many events scheduled throughout Romania and the
rest of Europe. I suppose that for these reasons the URR was making
a big showing. I must say that at least on the surface, I agree with
their goals—progression and reconstruction,
breaking away form the old ways, persistent after 25 years, that
hold the country back. |
